Isola Tiberina Hospital
Goal
Collaborating with the Holy See to ensure the rescue of Isola Tiberina Hospital (formerly San Giovanni Calibita Fatebenefratelli Hospital), an institution that, prior to the intervention of the Foundation and the Holy See, was managed under an arrangement with creditors by the Casa Generalizia dell’Ordine Ospedaliero di San Giovanni di Dio.

SIT identified in Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS (Gemelli) the economic operator to be entrusted with the direct management of the hospital. To this end, in April 2022, it established Gemelli Isola Società Benefit S.p.A., a company that signed a business lease agreement, effective from September 1, 2022, until August 31, 2027, with a tacit renewal upon achieving certain objectives for two additional 5-year periods.
Development mode
Fondazione Leonardo Del Vecchio and Fondazione per la Sanità Cattolica have established a social enterprise in the form of a limited liability company, named “Sanità Isola Tiberina società a responsabilità limitata impresa sociale” (SIT), to which they have each contributed 75 million euros.
The program (launched in 2022) was divided into several phases:
a) Closure of the bankruptcy concordat;
b) Financial restructuring of Casa Generalizia’s exposure to restore its solvency;
c) Investments aimed at renewing the hospital (approximately 50 million euros);
d) Efficient management of the hospital to be entrusted to an industrial partner.
